Claude Fable 5.1 vs Opus 5.5: Is the Most Expensive One Worth It
Fable 5.1 costs $10 input and $50 output per million tokens, 2.5 times Opus. When the premium is justified.
- Fable input
- $10/M
- Opus input
- $4/M
- Cache ratio
- 2.5%
Claude Fable 5.1 is Anthropic's strongest model, released September 1, 2026. Official pricing: $10 input and $50 output per million tokens, 2.5 times Opus 5.5 at $4/$20, and five times Sonnet 5.5.
That price is justified in exactly one scenario: getting it wrong costs more than the model fee.
At a glance
| Fable 5.1 | Opus 5.5 | |
|---|---|---|
| Input (official) | $10 | $4 |
| Output (official) | $50 | $20 |
| Cache write | $2.50 | $2.00 |
| Cached read | $0.25 | $0.10 |
| Context | 1M | 1M |
| Max output | 128K | 128K |
| Release | Sep 1 | Sep 22 |
Identical specs. The only difference: Fable does not fail on tasks that Opus sometimes does.
When to use Fable
Not for daily work. Code completion, document summaries, FAQ responses do not need Fable. Sonnet 5.5 handles them. Opus 5.5 covers the hard cases.
Use it for three scenarios:
Compliance and security review. Contract analysis, regulation checks, data stream audits. Each review is worth hundreds or more. An extra few cents on the model fee is irrelevant.
High-stakes decision support. Analysis reports, risk assessments, investment recommendations. Output directly shapes human decisions. Accuracy is the only metric.
Arbitration between cheaper models. Run two cheap models on the same task. When their outputs disagree, let Fable decide. It has the lowest misjudgment rate.
Cache shrinks the premium
Fable's cached read is $0.25 per million tokens, 2.5% of the $10 input price. Opus shares the same ratio.
A document sent to Fable the first time costs full input. Every subsequent read costs $0.25. On a task that reviews 50 documents a day, the first pass is $0.50 per document. Every repeat is $0.0125. That gap shrinks to irrelevance fast.
Opus running the same workload risks getting one contract wrong, which costs more than a few hundred $0.0125s.
The right ratio is 5% at most
A sensible split: - 80% on Sonnet 5.5: daily coding, documents, questions - 18% on Opus 5.5: complex agents, multi-step reasoning - 2% on Fable 5.1: only the tasks where failure is not an option
That split runs roughly $210/month at 1000 daily short tasks. Running everything on Fable would be $1000+.
On HiAPI
Opus 5.5 is on HiAPI at $2.02 input, half the official $4. Fable 5.1 is coming. Swapping models is one field change with one key.
FAQ
What does Fable do that Opus cannot?
Not a spec difference. Fable is more stable on long-running complex tasks and less likely to drift after several tool-calling rounds.
Should Fable be the default?
No. Sonnet handles most work. Opus covers the rest. Fable is insurance.
Is caching more important for Fable?
Yes. Fable's cached read at 2.5% cuts the premium dramatically. Caching is mandatory with Fable.
When to switch up?
When the cost of getting it wrong exceeds several dollars. If it is just a retry, not worth it. If it means half an hour of rework or an affected customer, yes.
Bottom line
Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5 have identical specs and a 2.5x price gap. Do not use Fable daily. Use it only on tasks where mistakes are expensive. Caching turns it from a luxury into a tool. Two percent of calls is enough to get the benefit without the bill.
