Cost, iteration, and quality tradeoffs

Video generation is billed by output duration, so duration is your primary cost lever — and that changes how you should iterate.

The cheap loop is: draft at short duration, judge the motion idea, then extend only the prompts that earned it. A prompt that produces a broken subject at six seconds will produce a broken subject at thirty; you learn almost everything you need at the short end. Reserve long-duration renders for shots that have already passed a short validation pass, and reserve them again for the final cut rather than for exploration.

That gives you a working iteration ladder:

  1. Sketch — short clip, one candidate prompt, confirm the motion mode reads correctly.
  2. Refine — same duration, adjust one slot at a time. Two slots changed at once and you will not know which one fixed it.
  3. Commit — extend duration on the winning prompt, accepting that the longer render may still drift and need one more pass.

Quality tradeoffs follow the same shape. Longer clips buy you more shot, but they also buy more opportunities for drift; a cut of three well-controlled short segments will usually beat one long generation, and it is easier to fix when one beat is wrong. Ambition in duration costs you both money and control.

Finally, cache aggressively. The most expensive render is the one you pay for twice because you did not store the spec. With a deterministic asset key, your re-render cost during editorial work is a file lookup, and your budget goes into new shots instead of old ones. Build the short loop first, let it earn the long renders, and the whole workflow stays fast and affordable.
